It was a tight battle, but Soundgarden‘s ‘Black Hole Sun’ has emerged to earn its first Classic Cage Match victory over Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Closer.’ The standout track off of Soundgarden’s stellar ‘Superunknown’ album is a wicked rocker giving Chris Cornell’s voice a chance to shine while some sinister licks are laid down under his voice. The track received just shy of 55 percent of the final tally to advance, but 1994 was a big year for hard rock and the hits just keep on coming.
Soundgarden’s competition this week is The Offspring‘s classic, ‘Come Out and Play,’ another track that was virtually inescapable during the summer of ’94. Almost as well known for Dexter Holland’s line ‘Keep ‘Em Separated,’ the track also stands out for its Middle Eastern guitar vibe and opening percussion. Fans will get plenty of chances to hear it this summer as The Offspring are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the ‘Smash’ album on tour and with a special anniversary release.
So will it be Soundgarden’s ‘Black Hole Sun’ or The Offspring’s ‘Come Out and Play’ taking the next step in the Loudwire Classic Cage Match. Rock both 1994 tracks at full volume and then vote for the song you feel should advance in the Classic Cage Match poll below.
(This Classic Cage Match will run until Friday, May 23, at 2PM ET. Fans can vote once per hour! So come back and vote often to make sure your favorite song wins!)
