Soundgarden Members Team Up With Brandi Carlile For 'Record Store Day' Tribute To Chris Cornell

For this year's "Record Store Day", members of SOUNDGARDEN have teamed with singer Brandi Carlile to record new versions of "Black Hole Sun" and "Searching With My Good Eye Closed".

The tribute to late SOUNDGARDEN vocalist Chris Cornell will be released as a 12-inch on September 26, which is the second of three separate "Record Store Drops" this year.

In addition to Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron, Carlile worked with her frequent collaborators, twins Phil and Tim Hanseroth.

The songs were recorded at Seattle's London Bridge Studio, a legendary place that hosted both SOUNDGARDEN and Carlile early in their careers, along with many other Seattle music luminaries.

Carlile wrote about recording her early demos there with her band, saying, "SOUNDGARDENwere just gods to us back then. Total pioneers and unreachable to us in every way. We went about making our demos and cleaning the studio when we couldn't afford the bill never knowing that in November of 2019 we would go back to London Bridge and RECORD TWO SONGS WITH THEM!!"

Seattle is my home. It’s where I met the twins. It’s in my soul. I travel the country now for the greatest job on earth but when I dream of Seattle, I hear Soundgarden in my sleep. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We used to play all the dirty four hour sets in all the darkened bars in Pioneer Square, and from Queen Anne to Georgetown I screamed out “searching with my good eye closed” at least twice a night. I wanted to sound exactly like Chris Cornell. You could smoke here then, and it lowered my voice...gave it an edge. To me, Soundgarden is honesty and mysticism - they breathe rock and roll. The twins and I met in the late 90’s in a famous Seattle studio called London Bridge. The guy in the picture with me is Rick Parasher (RIP) and he introduced us. Soundgarden were just gods to us back then. Total pioneers and unreachable to us in every way. Since 2008, Record Store Day has grown into the world’s largest single-day music event, shining a light on the culture of the indie record store across the globe. In 2020, that world is different, so Record Store Day will be too. RSD is now scheduled to be celebrated with special, properly distanced release dates on Saturdays in August, September and October.

Record Store Day will look very different this year, but supporting indie record stores may be more important than ever. We don't know what sort of rules will be in place, or what sort of gatherings people will be in the mood for this year, so we're focusing on the music and getting the really great titles on the RSD Official List this year into the stores and into your hands, in the most financially and socially responsible way.

The titles on the RSD 2020 Official List will be released at participating record stores on one of these three RSD Drops: August 29th, September 26th, or October 24th.   The new version of The List, with newly assigned RSD Drops dates for each title is below. You can choose to view the List on our website, with added detail and artwork, or you can print out a PDF that can be used as a wishlist or shopping guide.
