On the anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind (September 24, 1991), Louder Sound collects memories of the album from Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, Josh Homme, Melissa auf der Maur, Stone Gossard and Chris Cornell. It opens in July 1991, when Butch Vig played Billy Corgan an early tape of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on a boombox in Madison, Wisconsin. Corgan says he knew right away it was a classic.
The piece also covers how Vig came to the record after working with Smashing Pumpkins on Gish and the Sound City sessions in May 1991. Cobain’s only instruction to him was “I want to sound heavy.” Musicians across the scene, Chris Cornell among them, then reflect on how the album changed rock in the ’90s.
