Original (pre-show) post:

It’s difficult to say now what we’ll be able to come away with…
We hope to be able to record parts of the show, and post clips on this page tomorrow [over]night.

If we can, we will try to also live-stream on our Twitter feed at Twitter.com/iJeffgarden (note the username is iJeffgarden and not Jeffgarden on twitter)

If we have to choose 1, while the live stream is cool, it also lowers the quality of the video in order to broadcast it easier, so we would forgo that in favor of videos that we would post after the show. If we can do both, we will (try).

In any case, whatever we do end up with will pop up on this post, and our What’s Mine Is Ours page

‘I Am The Highway: A Tribute To Chris Cornell’ will take place on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at The Forum in Los Angeles. Audioslave Art By Carlos Vargas

For The Love Of Audioslave
15 years later — the legacy of an original fire. Featuring: Tim Commerford
Full Post

Excerpt:

About 1,100 miles up the west coast, Chris Cornell found himself in the aftermath of quite a successful and incredibly moving solo record, Euphoria Morning, as Soundgarden had disbanded in 1997. Much to the surprise of both parties, it was acclaimed producer Rick Rubin who suggested that Morello, Commerford and Wilk get together with Cornell. The timing seemed to be perfect. When asked about his initial thoughts to Rubin’s suggestion, Commerford with much enthusiasm responded, “I immediately thought about Badmotorfinger. It’s one of my favorite records. I spent so much time with that record, just loving it. I thought about ‘Slaves & Buldozers’ and ‘Jesus Christ Pose.’ These are songs that are anthems to me. It was so exciting.”

Commerford explained, they immediately started thinking about the endless possibilities of having Cornell’s voice blend with their music. “I think the first day Rick hit us up with Cornell, we were at his house and we all listened to ‘Slaves & Bulldozers’ and we discussed how Cornell could just do anything. Little did I know it was not really going to go in that direction. I see Audioslave as more classic rock, singer, chord progression type of music. Things like that, we never really did with Rage.” It seemed to be a natural pairing. Three robust musicians joining forces with an unmistakably potent voice that’s an instrument unto itself. All sounds made by guitar, bass, drums and vocals. Again — how fitting.

The Inspiration Of Audioslave In 10 Stunning Lyrics
To Be Yourself Is All That You Can Do

As we are now 15 years past the self-titled debut of Audioslave, it is more apparent than ever just how moving their art was/is. There is a significant difference in mood between Audioslave and Out of Exile, while Revelationsserves as a cautiously optimistic path into the future.

Here, we crack open the Audioslave vault and extract 10 sets of inspiring lyrics. What you will find is that though their sound was consistently explosive, delicate words were placed in both the loudest and quietest moments — creating an intimate setting for the listener to make of them what they please.

“Cochise”

Well, I’ve been watching
While you’ve been coughing
I’ve been drinking life
While you’ve been nauseous

The first sentence Audioslave ever said to us.
*Note the “thing” scream in the bridge deserves its own segment

Thoughts On The MTV VMA's & The Chester Bennington (and sorta Chris Cornell but not really) Tribute

This Sunday, the 33rd annual MTV Video Music Awards aired.  Of all the music events that we thought might have a Chris Cornell or Soundgarden tribute, this one was the sure bet.  MTV was [overly] kind to the Seattle scene as early as the late 80's, and continued to support Soundgarden into the early 90's, bestowing them with a "Buzzworthy" title for Outshined, and giving them airplay in spite of the band not exactly helping with their own promotion.

Soundgarden had always stayed away from tv show appearances, even with a #1 album and multiple hit singles.  They always thought of it as intruding on someone else's show and didn't feel right showing up to promote a single. When it came to MTV though, they always seemed to have a symbiotic relationship.  They appeared on late shows and in prime time, and usually seemed uncharacteristically at ease.

While the MTV of 2017 is a far cry from the play-Black-Hole-Sun-500-times-a-day MTV of 1994, it was pretty likely that there would be a pretty meaningful look back at the legacy of Chris Cornell and his bands' music - even if only a quick montage of music videos over the years.

Soundgarden took home the VMA for Best Metal/Hard Rock Video for Black Hole Sun in 1994

Even beyond the 90's, with Soundgarden [and arguably Chris Cornell] at their commercial peak, and with MTV still relevant as an authority for music, the network was still kind to Chris, airing the iconic Ed Sullivan Theater Audioslave concert on MTV2, and airing Soundgarden's 2010 return to Lollapalooza on MTV Live.

As Jared Leto started his speech, it was immediately clear that this was a tribute to Chester Bennington.  It was genuine and came from a close friend. With the exception of the Linkin Park performance that was played being cut short almost immediately after starting (and the definitely not planned, but ill-timed promo for the new MTV show "Dare To Live" being the lead out), it was a decent enough tribute.

While Chris Cornell was mentioned, and Jared did specifically say that he was asked to speak about both Chris and Chester, the fact that it was such an afterthought had us [and many others] assuming that there would still be a Chris Cornell tribute later in the evening.   Again, Chris was mentioned, but it seemed to be a mention to give some context to Chester's story.  If Chester had passed in a plane crash, I wonder if Chris would have been mentioned at all.

As Soundgarden fans since forever, we're accustomed to the snubs by now.  We've seen all the posters with the top billings going to newer bands, we've been to stores that carried everything Nirvana and nothing Soundgarden.  It's part of what makes being a Soundgarden fan and finding fellow fans so great.  In a way, we wouldn't have it any other way.  Soundgarden became this huge band, despite never trying to be.  They wrote dark, heavy music and made the mainstream come to them.

The problem is, right now, the snubs hurt.

This isn't a top songs of the 90's list on some click bait site that forgets to list Soundgarden. This is an institution that a lot of Soundgarden fans grew up with.  An institution that both helped Soundgarden, and owes a great deal to Soundgarden.  It wouldn't have taken much to just play 10 seconds of a few videos.  It wouldn't have taken much to spend a separate minute talking about Chris.   It wouldn't have taken much to just air a clip of Chris with Chester and Linkin Park, instead of the 5 seconds of the Linkin Park VMA performance.

MTV, we're not angry. Just disappointed.

Tom Morello’s Tribute Post - ChrisCornell.com

Chris Cornell

1964 - 2017

In his song Sunshower, Chris wrote:

All you’ll be, you are today. It’s alright when you’re caught in pain and you feel the rain come down. It’s alright when you find your way, they you see it disappear. It’s alright. Though your garden’s gray I know all your graces someday will flower, in a sweet sunshower.

Chris, I love you, brother. I love your unparalleled artistry. I love your smile. I love your ridiculously beautiful hair. I love your willingness to help others. I love your love of family.

I’d like to ask everyone present to consider making two pledges today in memory of the great Chris Cornell. First, to pledge to offer unconditional forever support to his family, especially his three beautiful children. Lily, Christopher, Toni, if you ever need to talk, need a hug, would like to hear stories about your dad, would like to TELL stories about your dad, need a guitar lesson, OR if you need to be reminded how very much your father loved you with all his heart, every one of us here today is there for you. Through Chris we are your extended family and lifelong resource of love and support.

Second, I’d like to ask everyone here to make a pledge to each other. Look to your right, look to your left. If you ever find yourself in a moment of sadness and doubt, if you fall off the wagon, if you are depressed, if you’re in trouble, if you feel like you might slip off the tightrope of life, in that moment you can call the person sitting next to you right now, you can call me. For Chris’s sake let’s make a commitment to look after one another.

And Chris, please say hello to some old friends for us. Say hi to Kurt, give my love to Layne, and I know that you will enjoy  being roommates with Andrew Wood again. That’s one spectacular All Star grunge choir right there. I’d love a bootleg of those heavenly campfire jam sessions.

Chris was many things but I think of him as a redeemer. As the driving force of Soundgarden he redeemed hard rock and metal. Unapologetically embracing badass riffs, he eschewed lyrics about dungeons or dragons and instead wrote deep dark soul searching poetry that opened the door for generations of artists who felt empowered to use their brains along with their musical brawn.

Then Chris redeemed me and Timmy and Brad. It was Badmotorfinger that was one of the main inspirations for Rage Against The Machine and then years later we found ourselves in a band, Audioslave, with the man himself, opening a wonderful chapter of musical exploration and global rocking. Getting to watch firsthand Chris’ effortless conjuring of gorgeous and ferocious melody and his epic rock god-ness on a daily basis is one of the highlights of my life. We made music that I’m so proud of and then rocked Cuba, the first American band to do it, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

And then Chris redeemed himself. Coming out of a period of addiction in the early 2000’s he turned his life around. I’d like to acknowledge and say thank you to someone here today, Tim Commerford. During this period it was Timmy who with an inspired, heroic act of love saved Chris Cornell’s life in 2001 and helped give us all sixteen more years of this beautiful man. But it was Chris himself, with the support and boundless love of Vicky, who built a wonderful, close knit, loving family, who made some of the best music of his career. He played beautiful solo concerts across the planet and after a twelve year break he reconnected with his Audioslave brothers on January 19th of this year. It was the last time I saw Chris. I felt so blessed to stand next to his feral rock fury and soaring vocals one last time. He was just SHINING. His last words to me were, “I had such a great time, let’s do that again. Whenever you guys want.”

It is important today to honor Chris Cornell, the devoted husband and loving father, the warm friend and bandmate, but I’d also like to tip my hat to the darker corners of Chris’ soul because I believe that’s where his brilliance as an artist stemmed from. Chris once texted me in the middle of the night, “If you swallow the coin from the wishing well, your dreams will come true in heaven or hell.” The demons he wrestled with were real. But he harnessed those demons and rode them like a mother flippin’ Chariot Of Lightning strapped with Marshall Stacks to make some of the greatest rock n roll of all time. Loud Love. Just thinking about that awesome jam throws me into headbanging convulsions. Hands All Over. The beauty of Seasons. Try not to cry. Badmotorfinger top to bottom. It’s INSANE. You thought you were safe? Here comes Spoonman. Then Audioslave. He’s back! Cochise, Like A Stone, Show Me How To Live, I Am The Highway. You’re rocking, you’re crying, you can’t make up your damn mind. Chris is as melodic as the Beatles, he’s as heavy as Sabbath, he’s as haunting as Edgar Allen Poe.

Thank you, Sunshower. Thank you for your love, your friendship, your peerless talent.

The body is weak. The psyche is fragile. Things decay and are gone in time. Gardens turn gray. But, Chris, I know two things that are fucking invincible and will endure forever, your beautiful voice and our love for you.
