“Badmotorfinger remains one of the defining albums of the grunge era and an essential milestone in the evolution of alternative metal and hard rock.”
Matt Bishop marks 35 years since Soundgarden released Badmotorfinger on October 8, 1991, just weeks after Nevermind and Ten. The band’s third album was its first with bassist Ben Shepherd, who replaced Hiro Yamamoto and completed the classic lineup with Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron. Made with producer Terry Date, it delivered “Rusty Cage,” “Outshined” and the Grammy-nominated “Jesus Christ Pose.”
The piece recalls how tours with Guns N’ Roses and the 1992 Lollapalooza helped the record find its audience. It peaked at No. 39 on the Billboard 200, went platinum in January 1993 and double platinum by April 1996, and many fans still call it the band’s finest and most uncompromising statement.
